The following is written by my friend Pastor Phil Vestal. Meet him here.
Jesus’ final days and his death are a foolishness to the world. It makes no sense for “God with us” to die at the hands of his enemies. If he was really God, truly the savior of the world, how could the Roman Empire capture, beat, and kill him? The whole thing must have been a lie. What foolishness!
To those who see the bigger picture, however, this foolishness is actually the greatest news of all time. These events, rather than confirming the powers of the world to be what they thought they were, they have undermined the entire system and revealed the crumbling foundations it has all been built upon.
God’s Kingdom is not like the kingdom of this world. It doesn’t rely upon human-made structures, weapons, or riches to reign. God’s Kingdom is built upon love, where all are invited and all thrive at the same time. Therefore, this Kingdom comes about not through the methods of kings and generals but by undermining them.
Instead of killing them, they kill you.
Instead of cursing them, you bless them.
Instead of condemning them, you forgive them.
Instead of casting them out, you keep inviting them in.
Instead of death being the final word in the story,
resurrection is the new word on the street.
That’s why Jesus went to the cross. He was showing that the ways the world has tried to get things done don’t work. They don’t last. Instead, love wins. So, the cross, rather than being a sign that God has lost, is the sign that God’s love wins. The resurrection confirms that the way of sacrificial service and love is the pathway to life for all. That is where the real power is revealed to reside.
What might this mean for your life this week as Jesus heads to the cross? Will you choose the ways of the world or the foolishness of God? The ways of the world are tempting, but all lead to a dead end. The foolishness of God doesn’t make logical sense but is the only path to true life now and forever.
Choose some foolishness this week.
